Sarah M. This paper reports on the pilot and first implementation years of Generative Activities in Singapore GenSing. In the pilot year the author led a series of networked generative, function-based algebra activities with five classes of Secondary 1 students.

The functions submitted by the students for one activity were collected and analyzed. Findings were that students created a range of correct functions utilizing many important mathematical concepts.

The analysis of the functions highlighted the need for new and more powerful tools for teachers to analyze the vast quantity of data created in generative activities. In preparation for the implementation year of the grant, new analysis tools were created, this article concludes with a review of those tools and examples of the insights into student data that they allow. Generative Activities are activities where all of the data used for classroom discourse and instruction are generated by the students. Generative Activities can be created for many subject areas.
