I had my own studio for thirteen years and still have an expensive relatively high end recording set up and a large number of microphones. Being able to shift the width of the mics is clever in a unit in this price range. The unit feels solid and the knobs and switches feel robust.
In fact as a package you seem to get a lot for the money. I bought it for field recording and recording ideas in the campervan mainly and have tried it with a pair of AKG EBs which are definitely better than the built in mics but the built in mics are perfectly sufficient for some relatively serious recording.
Using the H6 with one of my favourites preamps DAV Electronics BG1 with the AKGs and the conversion set to 24bit 96k gives an impressive file output which is clearly better than the built in mics though this is an expensive system to compare them to. Using a Shure SM7B with the built in pres is less impressive but the Shure Is known for requiring a decent boost from a high gain mic preamp though the sound for voice over is really rather good without one. It depends on your expectations of low end hiss of which there is little in that case.
Using the menu system is okay but feels a little dated though the screen is not bad. The issue I have with the tilted screen is setting levels if you were say, playing a guitar in front of the XY mics as the screen tilts away from you.
Great sound quality and easy operation. Unfortunately I have had to return the unit due to the fact that the Amazon online purchasing system cocked up and instead of charging me for the unit over a 3 month period has chaged me the full amount – and then, when I have tried to sort the problem out with Amazon’s customer advisers yes, multiple advisers got involved over the course of the online conversation!
I have been given the run-around which eventually resulted in me having to return the unit for a refund when Amazon could easily have re-arranged the correct payment schedule!
One person found this helpful. Great Product and first tests have blown me away. Now need to improve my guitar playing cause this device pickups up everything.
I love it! A very handy piece of equipment. I would also need to capture sound from another speaker or someone from the audience asking questions. I would be shooting in different venues that would have an in house audio system that I would need to capture as well. I needed a versatile audio setup to adapt to different situations. These recorders are from the same company as the Zoom H4n. The H6 has 4.
Normalize files for maximum gain, split them into smaller chunks, and even insert up to 99 marks per recording. Special Recording Functions The H6 All Black offers selectable recording functions designed to prevent you from accidentally missing the start of a performance. Auto-record can automatically start recording when a user-set sound level is detected, making it great for voice-activated recording. Even if your original track is distorted, chances are the backup version will be fine!
Supports External Remote Control Use the RCH-6 remote available separately in the APH-6 accessory pack to control the transport, arm tracks, and adjust volume at a distance while eliminating handling noise. Gear that gets in your way and slows you down has no place here. They are clearly labeled and each feature a red LED to make it absolutely clear which inputs are armed for recording.
These buttons are larger and raised slightly higher than the input selection buttons above them, making them easy to differentiate.
All transport controls have a positive click when pressed, so you know with certainty when a button is pressed. Perhaps the only thing I would have liked to see is a raised nub on the stop button to make it easier to find the button in the dark. However, the record button starts and stops recording, making this mostly a non-issue. The record button will be getting the most use during production and it is thankfully clearly differentiated from the rest.
